Qualifications for Senatorial Candidates:
The minimum qualifications for student senators are stated in Article V of the SGA Constitution. These qualifications must be maintained throughout the Senator's tenure on the Senate. Senators are either elected annually in November, during open elections, or are approved throughout the year by the Senate after an interview process conducted by the Internal Affairs committee. In addition to the minimum qualifications, prospective senators must have at least three letters of recommendation from three different recognized campus organizations, faculty, or staff with at least one being from a faculty or staff. A slip of good standing from the registrar's office is also required.

SENATORS ARE EXPECTED TO:

  • Promptly and regularly attend Senate meetings held in the MSC board room at 6pm on Wednesdays
  • Adhere to the rules and regulations of the Senate Standing Rules and Constitution
  • Act as a liaison between the students, various campus organizations, administration, faculty, and staff
  • Maintain regular contact with constituent groups assigned by the Senate President
  • Honesty, integrity and good character are qualities sought by the senate. Additionally, proven leadership abilities or at least the desire to make a substantial contribution to the students' way of life are needed in order for the Senate to fulfill its role as an organization.

The Student Senate is a serious organization designed to meet the needs and protect the rights of Texas A&M University-Commerce students. This responsibility should not be taken lightly. Prospective applicants must be willing to make a total commitment to the Senate; otherwise they should not apply.
